St Wolfgang is the prettiest village in the Austrian Lake District (Salzkammergut), with the best Advent Market in the region (open every day during Advent). The village is full of quaint and beautiful painted buildings, many kept in the same family for centuries. There are many artisan shops selling hand-made candles, soaps, glass items, Lebkuchen (honey/ginger cookies), plus traditional lederhosen, dirndls, etc. In St Wolfgang is the Schafberg Railway; the steepest steam cog-wheel railway in Austria. Famous from the Sound of Music, the 45 minute ride is worth it for the breathtaking 360° view at the top over 7 of the Salzkammergut lakes. This is an area for all seasons, from skiing in Winter to parasailing or water skiing on the lakes in the Summer. And throughout the year: walking, cycling, or just touring and admiring the beautiful scenery. There are festivals, shows and celebrations all year in the towns around the lakes.
